God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
There are many things that I could say about these thoughts. If there ever was a challenge thrown at us by the Creator, this is as good an example as there is. We look around us in our 21st century world an we can understand the dangers of greedy exploitation of natural resources. It is easy for us now, with our sophisticated machinery to bring the earth to its knees by taking more away from it than it can give. We are challenged to subdue it, not kill it. Not any more than we would exchange our attitude when it comes to dogs and cats. We have them rather well subdued, but it is not in our intention to kill them off and wipe them off the planet. This is something that I think about a lot.
In a corner of my mind there is the story of the Maoris of New Zealand. When captain Cook got there, [early 1770's] there were few trees left on the island. It was because the natives were not careful to re-propagate them as they used them. Cook taught them to do this. I tell you this story to point out that careless exploitation of Mother earth is nothing new.
I have received a three minute video from the BBC. It is my opinion that this is a video with a great lesson for all of us 21st century citizens who think that without technology humans don't get much done. I invite you to watch the video and after your experience, spend some time reflecting on its meaning. You just may catch yourself thinking about the power with which God has invested natural human beings. Click on it and have yourself a spiritual moment, compliments BBC ONE.
